South Korea is another country that will officially implement a nationwide ban on mobile phones and smart devices in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. The ban will take effect with the start of the next school year on March 2026, allowing exceptions for educational purposes or emergencies with teacher approval.

The law aims to combat smartphone addiction and its negative impact on student learning and well-being, with very strong bipartisan support from lawmakers concerned about declining academic performance and student mental health.

Studies have shown that students experience increased levels of anxiety brought upon by excessive phone and social media use.

The ban does not include students with disabilities who use phones as assistive tools for studying.

Several schools have already adopted similar policies about phone restrictions but passing the law formalizes the practice and makes it mandatory to implement.

South Korea is one of the countries with the highest cellphone adoption rates, at nearly 100% among its whole population.
